Home Music This Month Starfield

STARFIELD just released their new album “The Saving One” early this year. And it is already making huge waves. The title song “The Saving One” is a powerful praise and worship song that churches around the country will be singing for years to come.

STARFIELD are two brothers in the flesh joined with two brothers in The Lord. These four guys have a heart for The Lord that is so apparent in their music that it was a great pleasure to interview them. We spoke with Tim earlier this month and he was such an inspiration as a musician but more so as a believer. Here what Tim says about his faith, the music, and his personal life.

What was it like for you guys growing up?

Tim: Yes my brother and I were brought up for three generations as Christians here in Canada. We learned all the worship songs in church back in the early 80s and out of that, came a real love for music and also both my parents were musicians. So we really sort of gravitated toward that as our artistic outlet of choice. I learned guitar from my father and was in the youth worship band and eventually started STARFIELD and here we are a dozen or so years later.

So when did you personally come to faith apart from your parents?

Tim: It was a combination of being raised in the church and then coming to a realization at about 15 years old that I was kind of living in that luke warm place that is talked about being the worst place to be. I just had to make that decision. And it was a tough one because I was at a Christian school. And it’s kind of ironic that it would be tough but I felt like the only Christian at a Christian school. I ended up losing a lot of friends and it was a really lonely time for me but it was worth it when given the option of either going with the crowed or following what I believed to be the destiny that I was created for which would be following hard after Christ and living a life that was exemplary and understanding my role as an ambassador for Jesus and an extension of the church. So high school was crummy but the reward was being close to Jesus.

So when you guys are on the road how do you stay grounded in the faith?

Tim: Obviously there’s our personal time with God. But as a group of guys we really try to hold each other accountable. We try to keep an understanding that we are accountable to each other first and then to everybody else. And not just from keeping each other from sinning but or simple things like that but even just as we’re called to worship in front of thousands of people. We are called to love people but we are first called to love and be there for each other to be brothers. So that’s kind of how we try to approach things on the road. We are just another little body of Christ doing a worship ministry.

So when you are home where do you go to church?

Tim: We go to a church called “The Bridge”’ it’s just a, preach the word of God and sing some songs kind of church. It’s perfect because we spend so much of our lives putting on a show and we come back home and it’s so great to just meet with a group of believers that we live with, in our home town and just be normal and not be the ones leading it. I mean we do some times as well but its really an amazing small group that we are a part of. People I would die for if I had the chance in a great little community.

So like what person in the bible would you say you related to the most?

Tim: Maybe Thomas the doubting disciple. I think he had a really mature understanding of Jesus but I think he was one of the more honest apostles when it came to just trying to wrap the mind of God being there with them. As wonderful and amazing as it seems our human reasoning and intellect and just inability to see the big picture it always present but I think it’s only a matter of acknowledging it and being ok with it that makes us be a whole and complete person. And I think Thomas got that. But he’s not really mentioned that much in The Bible and I think he gets the bad wrap because he’s kind of the doubter but I think if I really tried to find someone in The Bible that I relate to the most it would be him.

So how did you guys come up with the name for the band?

Tim: It was taken from a Canadian singer and song writer, sort of our version of a Bob Dillon. Who also like Bob Dillon had an experience with God and kind of flirted with Christianity for a bit. He wrote this song “Lord of The Star Fields”. It’s a song about God and the creation. And we stole it. We just kind of ripped it off. We haven’t been sewed yet.
