Home Music This Month Chris Sligh

Some of you may remember Chris Sligh from American Idol but to us he is just another family member in the family of Christ. America may have loved him as a player on the show but we love that Chris is using his talents to worship Jesus Christ.Chris was so awesome to take the time to answer our questions while on the road.

What age where you when you knew you wanted to be in music?

Really not until I was 20 or 21. I started off college as a pre-law major, fell in love with music, studied classical voice, then discovered that I could write pop music. From there, the rest is history.

Were you brought up in a Christian home?

Yes. My dad was a pastor my entire life. When I was 6 they became missionaries and at 7 we moved to Germany. My parents are still missionaries.

What was it like growing up for you?

I grew up in a strict, fundamental Baptist home. So growing up was strict, I guess would be the best way to describe it.

Are you involved in any other ministries besides the music?

I'm involved with Compassion International and have worked over the years with different sides of ministry, including youth ministry.

How and when did you come to faith?

I made a profession of faith when I was 4 but truly came to Christ at 15 at a camp called Northland Camp.

How do you stay grounded in the faith when on the road?

I have really good guys in my band who keep me grounded. I also am married to a woman who daily let's me know I'm not as awesome as I think I am all the while supporting me and cheering me on...

What church do you go to?
I go to Crosspoint Church in Nashville.

What person in the bible would you say you relate to or admire most and why?

Peter. He stuck his foot in his mouth a lot.

What scripture do you cling to in hard time?

I love the books of Paul, especially Ephesians. When I'm going through a hard time, when Paul talks about joy in Christ, it's easy to realize how petty the things I struggle with are.

Who is Jesus to you and why do you choose to believe in Him?

I tell a variation of this almost every night: the reason I believe isn't because I grew up in a pastor's home, or because someone got to me at a young age. The reason that I believe is that when I look at the world round me, I know this couldn't have just happened. There must be a creator. If there's a Creator, I want to know and be known by my Creator.

If there's a good and bad afterlife, I want the good. I want to spend eternity with my Creator. The problem is how to get there. When I'm honest with myself, I know that I can never be good enough. My good will never outweigh my bad. So it only makes sense that if I can't pay the price, someone did. So, when I hear that Jesus paid the price that I couldn't it only makes sense.

What has been your biggest challenge as a Christian artist?

Just trying to figure out what to write about. So much in Christian music has been hashed and rehashed, it's difficult to find something fresh to talk about, or a fresh angle on an old subject.

What message do you want people to get from your music?

The first album was more an amalgamation of subjects. The album I'm working on now has a message of brokenness and how Christ is the true healer of brokenness.

When can we tell the kids to go pick up your next album?

Not sure of the exact date yet, but it looks like September of this
year.

These are all things that all of America needs to hear. Words that Jesus is Lord, words that are from the heart of a man who has an amazing voice but that uses it for the glory of God. We look forward to Chris’s next album. Check Chris out online by going to http://www.chrissligh.com/
